08 Joint Design Nº 469
I have been thinking about doing this forever, and finally got around to actually making a matte board template for the carving wax ears. It was easy to do. I just used a scrap piece of matte board, laid it up against one ear, and traced the outline of the ear onto the matte board. Then I cut it out. Click on any image to enlarge it.
I marked a point for the ear hole. Since there is already a measured ear hole in each carving wax ear, this hole will fit both of them. I will just flip the template over for each ear. I used a small drill bit to make the hole in the matte board template.
This is a snapshot of the matte board template on the right ear, pegged in place with a sharpened bamboo skewer.
This is a snapshot of the matte board template on the left ear, pegged in place with a sharpened bamboo skewer. All I did was flip the same piece of matte board over for this ear. I still have to make one more final measurement with my calipers to position the template on each ear. I will place one point of the calipers under the nose, and the other point at the top of the ear, then pin the template in place with a straight pin from my sewing kit.
